You can move entire folder, discussions, links and chat rooms, and you can move individual messages or threads of messages from one discussion to another.

There are a variety of ways to accomplish the same thing.

Moving Folders, Discussions, Links and Chat Rooms Using Export

If you click Export and then Export, move, delete or purge selected items while you're within a folder, you get a list of everything contained in that folder, with checkboxes next to them to identify which objects you want to move.

With the checkboxes, select the items you want to move, choose the destination folder from the popup menu, and click Move. The items are moved directly without an export/import sequence. The unique IDs will remain the same so your internal links should still work.

You can also move folders and discussions using the Move button, described next.

Moving Discussions, Threads, or Messages

To move whole discussions, threads of messages, or individual messages, click on the small Move button next to the Edit and Delete buttons. The page will reload, instructing you to navigate to the discussion or folder you want to move the item to. Find the location, and then click the To here button, which is up near the Mark button. You'll get a confirm screen. Click OK and the item(s) will appear in the new location.

If you move an individual message, or a group of messages, to a folder, you'll create a new discussion with them.

If you move a number of messages into an existing discussion, the new messages will be tacked onto the end of the old discussion, no matter what the creation dates of the old and new messages are.

Note: If anyone has bookmarked a message at the old location, their bookmarks will not follow to the new location, but will continue to point to whatever new message fills up that location after the move.

Moving by Exporting and then Importing

It's possible to move discussions, folders, and chat rooms within Web Crossing without using the Move button or the Export area's Move function. To do this, export the items from where they currently are held. Navigate to the place you want them to appear, and import them.

UniqueIDs (and thus any internal links) will be preserved if and only if you export and immediately import the material and no new discussions, folders, or chat rooms are created before you do the import.

Using Export and Import to Move a Whole Database

There are several reasons you might need to export the whole site and reimport it, either to the same server or to another location.

  • If you have database corruption, it can usually be remedied with an export of the entire site and a subsequent reimport of the SGML file. See Restoring Corrupted Data for details.
  • If you're moving to or from a Tru64 server machine, you'll need to do an export from the old server, and import to the new server. See Moving Databases for details.
